Growing up

One week from today, my son will be two years old. I am filled with pride and joy and a little mournful sadness that my baby is growing up. Just ask Brendan – he will already tell you he is “two”, and remind you that “Brendan no baby, Brendan big boy”.

My big boy is doing so many amazing things. His ability to communicate makes for so many fun moments. Like when we are driving in the car and we ask him if he wants to go really fast or just a little fast, and he decides that he wants to go, “Tiny Fast”. Or when he keeps telling me that there is a fire engine behind his chair – and when I go to look, I realize that he has taken the stickers he had on his hand, and started a collection on the base of his lamp. Or my favorite from this week – I sang Twinkle Twinkle Little Star at bedtime, and for the first time, he sang along with me.

Lots of growing up happening at school – our boy is starting the transition to his new classroom this week. It’s a little different experience from last time – he can’t wait to go to the big boy room! He loves the big kids, Teacher Vince who plays guitar, all the exciting toys in the classroom, and the b-ball hoop in the big boy yard:

We have been talking about how big boys have to really practice their listening so that we know they are ready to go to the next classroom. It works most of the time. Sometimes he forgets to listen at important times and we remind him that we know it’s hard, but that it makes us sad when he chooses not to listen. After his time in the big boy yard on Friday, Teacher Paula called to give me a report – she said that when they were lining up to go outside, Brendan said, “Daddy sad.” Teacher Paula asked why he was sad, and Brendan told her, “Brendan no listen.” She also let Brendan get on the phone to talk and we had an actual conversation. He didn’t want to let me off the phone, and kept asking to talk to Mama again. Teacher Paula is such a gem – we love her. She followed up with the above photos, and the email below:

Hey my favorite people,

Enjoy these pictures!
Lori, the conversation on the phone was priceless…he is soooo cute when he says “love you”.

Brendan had an awesome time visiting the Teddy Bear yard today. Thankful that Pat made an exception to let him visit; although I was not worried that he would have any resistance. He has been patiently waiting to visit for quite some time now. When I asked him if he wanted to go visit, he YELLED “YEAH!!”. (tear tear – I’m not ready for him to go yet!!)

See you guys later.

With much love and respect,

This next Friday is toddler graduation. I came in one morning and unexpectedly saw one of the other kids modeling the cap and gown. I burst into tears. I know I’m sappy, but that reaction surprised me – I didn’t feel particularly sentimental about a graduation ceremony for toddlers, but something about seeing this little tiny person in a cap and gown really got me. The teachers pointed out that it wasn’t even my child. Lord help us next Friday. The event is extra super duper special because Meredith will be joining us for the birthday party, and will be here in time for graduation. We can’t WAIT to have her here – and not just because she volunteered to help with all the party preparations. I have a long list of things I hope to accomplish before she arrives – fingers crossed for a nice long nap time today.
