Spreading out

I recently did some training with the managers in my group. The facilitator started off with a picture of a man holding twin babies and we were asked to interpret the story behind the photo. Similarly, how would you interpret the above photo?

  • Mother and son on a stroll in the woods
  • Mother and son lost in the woods
  • Family out scouting Christmas trees to reserve for the upcoming season
  • Crazy family bringing their tree home before Thanksgiving

It’s been said that the aged heavenly men and yogis of India were sexually dynamic for the duration of their lives… and they carried on quite a while.
The purpose of the management training exercise was to remind us that often times our perception of something influences the way we respond, even when we don’t know the real story. In the case of the picture of the man and the babies, his wife had died 10 days earlier and I felt sad the rest of the training. (thank you mister teacher man, for your creative training methods) In the case of the picture above, it’s to confess that we were indeed a crazy family bringing home our tree before Thanksgiving.

The Uncles guessed that it was one of my crazy pre-planning ideas, but they were wrong. This one was Rob’s idea, and it caused me to fall even more madly in love with him. Part of the problem with the holidays is that they feel so crammed into a short period of time. There are so many things we want to do, and so many things we feel we have to do. Even before Brendan, we found ourselves wishing we could slow time a little so there would be time to pause and enjoy the spontaneous quiet magic so often found this season. We always do a mad rush to get the house set up the F/SA/SU after Thanksgiving, because my parents have their annual Christmas party the following weekend, and then the work party is the weekend after – and then we travel for the holidays and there is plenty of last minute rushing around to do. So if we wait any longer than Thanksgiving weekend, we might just miss our opportunity.

This year we have a head start. And although we are slightly ashamed (and kept our blinds closed all weekend), I am also thrilled. We followed the tone we set on our third day of marriage when we decided to leave our mini-honeymoon three hours after we had arrived. We did it Gianino Style, and now I am SO looking forward to a quieter Thanksgiving weekend. I love that when we come home from Grandma and Grandpa’s, we will be greeted by sparkly lights and the scent of the tree. I love that Christmas carols will be played one extra week in our house. I might even have time to bake my first batch of cookies this weekend – not for any particular purpose – but for FUN. Imagine that!!?!

There were plenty of moments for Mom this weekend – one of the biggies was when Brendan first discovered the Nativity set by the tree. I watched my son carefully rearrange the exact same figures that I used to play with when I was a little girl. I remembered looking at them through younger eyes, imagining how it must have felt to be in that stable illuminated by the star. This year, however, Brendan is more focused on the figure that says, ‘MOOOO!’.

A little Chelsea update: At 3:00 AM the night after the ‘incident’ I heard her leave our bedroom. I rushed out after her with Rob right behind me. She was in the guest room, but rather than being sick, she was happily rolling around on the floor enjoying her sugar high. Apparently, we can cross caramels off the list of things that might upset her stomach. And I’m glad she thoroughly them, because I will not be offering any to her in the future.
