Christmas Eve

Our candlelight Christmas Eve service at church was hilarious. Not the word I was expecting to use, but it was. Brendan was dressed in his finest, complete with sweater vest and pants from Grandma, and his best hat from Auntie Jess and Uncle Frank. We got there almost on time – just a minute or two late.   Since the traditional Casler pew is right up front, we paraded down the aisle to sit down.  And Brendan had a ball.  First he noticed that Grandpa was sitting next to us and gave him a big smile.  Then he realized that there was a man up front telling a story and he got very interested – looking right up at him and sitting very still.  Wonders continued with lots of singing, including a special number by the choir where he spotted Grandma smiling back at him.  Daddy brought him up for the Children’s Sermon, Grandpa brought him up for communion time, there were candles to gaze at – but the very best moment came during the prayer.  Everyone was silent with their heads down and their eyes closed, and suddenly my son chose that moment to blow a loud raspberry.  From that moment, it was on.  He was chatting up a storm.  Not fussy, just chatty.  Finally Rob and I decided that maybe he should head to the back of the church to finish his story, and as Rob left the pew, Brendan looked right at me and gave me a very pointed raspberry.  Hilarious.

After church, Rob and Brendan and I headed over to Christmas Tree Lane with our hot chocolate and marshmallows for our traditional drive.  Brendan decided to nap through it this year, but some day he will look forward to it as much as we do.  After a quick bottle by the fire he had to get in bed soon after we got home (Santa was coming you know!) and the rest of us had our waffles and  finished wrapping some final gifts.

Now we’re primed and ready for Christmas morning.  I hope visions of sugar carrots are dancing in Brendan’s head.  We forgot to leave the piece of cheese out for Santa Mouse, but hopefully Santa knew he could help himself to whatever he needed in the fridge.
