Pumpkins

Each year we excitedly bring Brendan to the pumpkin patch, and each year he is underwhelmed. Last year he was at least excited about the jumpy house, but the pumpkins still held little appeal. This year we tried again. It was Scarlett’s first pumpkin patch date, so we invited she and her mommy and daddy up to our house to share a little pre-patch breakfast and playtime. (By the way, AWESOME and easy baked french toast recipe.) Scarlett was in love with Brendan, and he did a good job showing her around and sharing his toys (and his old highchair!).

Then we headed up to get our pumpkin on – and this year, he totally got it. In fact, he loved every single thing about it. He loved the pumpkins,

he loved the corn maze,

he loved the hay tower,

he loved the animals,

he loved seeing some of his friends there

he loved the corn pit – and he even loved collecting the corn that was scattered around everywhere like pixie dust. (he even shared a few kernels with some nice ladies who stopped to admire his collection.

He chose the first pumpkin he saw, and pretty much the next 10 or so, but then he realized there was a whole field of them to choose from and became more discerning. I loved being able to ask him about what kind of pumpkin he was looking for, and what kind of face he might like to carve. I loved watching him explore and seeing that like his mama, often he picked the ones that had something special about them – something that might make others think they were less than “perfect”.

Today he really wanted to carve a pumpkin, and you know what? Why not! Brendan showed us a few possible pumpkin faces:

So we carved the first one that we got last weekend at the overpriced lot by the freeway. Holy cow, they practically charged you to even look at the pumpkins. They had a good jumpy house though:

Brendan said he wanted “a happy face that was looking up” and luckily, daddy was there to help us. So I present to you, our first carved pumpkin of the season:

Chelsea is guarding the rest of them.

The picture of him looking at the camera under the canopy of corn? He looks exactly like my daughter. Or rather, like once-upon-a-time.

Maybe the corn makes one look more Iowanian?
