Eleventeen

Brendan is becoming quite the counter. He does One – Two – Three – very deliberately all the way up to Ten. Then it turns into – Ten – Eleven – Twelve – Thirteen – Fourteen – Eleventeen – Eighteen – Eleventeen – Eighteen… and so on until he is “done” counting. Eleventeen is my new favorite number. He is also consistently recognizing the letters “B”, “G”, “O” and “M” as well as the number “3”. The kid is a genius.

On Friday, Brendan and I went bowling.

He loved it. Brendan (and everyone else) would cheer like crazy when the ball reached the end of the lane – even if the ball was in the gutter. Then they put the gutter rails up for him and that’s when things really got crazy. If you’ve got a spare 10-15 minutes, I’ll show you:

My favorite part was what happened off camera, Brendan would circle around high fiving everyone like he had just won the world series. People ate it up. And gave him many fries and chicken fingers. Such a fun date.

Perhaps it was the bowling, or the Frozen Face Paint:

(also in place to enhance his face for the bowling experience) but this past weekend, Brendan really cranked his energy level up to elevnteen. This seems to happen from time to time, perhaps during growth spurts, but Rob and I always wonder if it will become the new norm. And let me tell you, we were exhausted. I’m happy to say that we are back to normal now – and he seems to be even sweeter than ever. When I went to visit at work, his teachers had glowing reports of kindness and good choices – and then while I was on the playground, one of his friends threw some tanbark at me. And look out – Brendan immediately went over waving his hands out in front of him and said, “Back up – back up – it is NOT okay to throw things at my Mommy!”. When he decided I was safe, he ran at lightning speed to the nearest teacher to report the crime. I assured everyone I would be okay, but it was nice to feel so protected. We tell stories every day. Many, many stories – it’s the first thing he asks for whenever we’re still for more than a moment. And lots of our stories are about superheroes (especially one named Brendan) – and how it’s great when they make good choices and help people, but it’s really unbelievably amazing when the superheroes can help the bad buys learn to be good guys – and how the best way to do that is by being kind and showing them that there is a better way to do things. Well, after the perp threw the tanbark at Mommy, he asked Brendan (more like demanded…) to play ball with us. I watched Brendan carefully. At first he looked at me with a sad face and said, “NO!” but then he turned back to the friend and said, “Okay – sure you can – I have an idea – you kick it to me, and I’ll kick it to Mommy”. So proud. Many a Mommy hug was given on that day, I can assure you. And like a cherry on top, that night I got asked to snuggle on the couch with him. We’ve taken the love straight up to at least eleventeen if not twelveteen.

Speaking of proud, I also have to share the best pumpkin drawings I’ve ever seen:

If you can believe it, there is more wonder. Brendan found golden treasure.
I’d tell you about it, but it’s better in his own words:
