Dancing

Rob and his Mom danced to the song, “I Hope You Dance” at our wedding. So I’ve always liked the song, but after becoming a mother, it hits me right where it counts. Definitely in a literal sense – I find that although I’m not much of a “public” dancer anymore, I’m the first one out there to dance with my son anywhere and anytime the opportunity arises – parades, farmers markets, the living room… but I also realize that it’s a figurative philosophy that I hope my son will embrace. This past week, we danced.

After 14 years at Lucasfilm, Rob accepted a job that was the right fit at the right time. And when something is the right fit at the right time, things tend to move pretty quickly. He actually received the offer while we were visiting Disneyworld. To be exact, the call came as we were waiting in line for Peter Pan. Big things tend to happen when we visit Mickey’s house. Rob came back to Lucas for 2 weeks, then had 2 weeks off before starting his new job this past Monday. He made a list of things to do – some chores to get done, a few daytime activities sprinkled in for fun. But the reality was that Lucas paid him out for the 6 weeks of vacation time that he would never have the opportunity to take. This hit home for me. There is no amount of money more precious than time – especially vacation time. So I did a complete role reversal – I told my list making, over and advanced planning self to pipe down, and suggested that we head to Hawaii. Even though we had *just* gotten back from two trips. Even though there were many practical reasons not to go. And uppon declaration, that right fit at the right time thing happened, and all the pieces fell into place. I packed for both me and Brendan in an hour and a half, people. That just doesn’t happen.

And I don’t know if this is what happens to you spontaneous people, but it was so awesome. For one week we wore nothing but swimsuits and flipflops. I actually got a shoulder strain from my arms dangling over the inner tube in the lazy river. Sad story, I know. (side note: I had NO idea that was how you spelled “inner tube”). We were just together. With no plans other than whether to hit the pool or the beach – no schedule to keep other than trying to catch every sunset.

It was the first time that Brendan cried when it was time to go home.
