We rounded out our last official weekend of summer by crossing nothing off our chore list, and focusing solely on the summer fun list. We’ve made a bigger dent than I thought we would. Although we never actively tried to schedule things just to cross them off, it’s funny how just the process of making a list and keeping it on the fridge can help keep important ideas in mind.
One of my favorite things we accomplished was, ‘Paint Rocks’. Although, we did not actually paint rocks – we painted sticks. Brendan has really been enjoying picking up sticks when we go on our bike rides. He likes to hand most of them to me, but always chooses to hold one against the handle bar as he rides. When we came in the other day, I asked him if he wanted to paint his stick. “Yeah”, he said nonchalantly as if it was something he had been doing for years. We got out the paint and let me tell you, this boy paints a mean stick. Not wanting to let the creative genius wane, I brought over some rocks to paint. Brendan looked at me shaking his head back and forth with a silly grin and said, “Mooooommmmyyy… you no paint rocks…”. So we stuck with the sticks.
We also added something to the summer fun list, something we hadn’t thought of – we took Brendan to see his first movie in a movie theater! We saw Planes, and he was such a good boy. He really liked it and wanted to sit in his own big boy seat. He needed to take one walk right in the middle, and a couple times he asked me if he could get up to look at the tiny lights on the wall, (of course he could… as long as he came right back. which he did.) but other than that he sat enthralled by the experience. As we bought our tickets, I told the young boy helping us that it was his first movie – he smiled and told us to have a great time. When we were just about to walk in, we heard someone calling, “Sir! Sir!” and as we turned around, the boy had run after us. He handed us a special ‘Planes’ pin and said, “Since it’s his first movie, I wanted him to have this”. It was the pin he wore on his shirt as we walked in, but he wanted Brendan to have it. Sometimes I really love people. As we left the theater, Brendan held his arms out like wings on a plane and ‘flew’ out to our car. In my book, that means a successful adventure, though he did tell us later that it was, ‘too loud’.
Grandma sent a special package for Brendan this weekend – it’s a book with all kinds of cars and trucks and things that go, and I figured she sent it because they are starting a special series at school on that topic. It has many different doors to open on each page revealing fun hidden pictures. I knew he’d like the book, but as we started to read it, I realized that Grandma had added her own special magic and added pictures of all Brendan’s favorite people so he could find them hiding in the doors.

We went to one of our favorite breakfast spots this morning, and sat at the table where I snapped one of my favorite pictures of Brendan. Luckily I had my camera with me again. (You’ll notice that toward the end, he not-so-subtly told me he was done with pictures.)
He is suddenly making another huge developmental leap – his focus is getting better, and this weekend he really started putting his puzzles together – and also hooking up his train tracks all by himself! He even matched all the truck cabs with the right color containers. And oh my goodness does he ride his trike fast! Mommy has to jog to keep up with him, but if he gets much fast we may need to get bikes or wear roller blades. Heaven help us. We took several long walks – one to the store where we parked the trike and got a treat to enjoy at the outside tables before we headed home. He talks and talks and says anything and everything. He has stopped waking up in the middle of the night, but is still waking up at 5am every day. It’s a good thing he is so cute. He always wakes up by yelling “Moommmmmy! Daaaaady!” over and over until we come in. This morning we tried to yell back in that it was too early. There would be silence for a few seconds, and then the “Mommy Daddy” would start again. Finally I asked him what he needed and he said, “I need you to come in my room!”. So I caved. I think true love must equal the person whom you are happy to see when they wake you up at 5am. Tonight he ate a giant dinner (a whole peach, a whole nectarine, 2 soy hotdogs dipped in ketchup, several slices of cheese, two strawberries, and 8 ounces of milk), and is wearing his first pair of 3T pajamas, so I’m hoping this might be the magic equation to get us back to a 6:30 wake up call.
