Hindsight

Hindsight is awesome. There was a period in my life where time dragged by so slowly. Every second seemed excruciating and I was convinced that I would never feel light and carefree again. If only I could have seen the future and known that one day the moments would fly by so fast. If only I could have known that there would come a time where I would wish that I could have a few extra hours in each day, and I would work to linger a little longer in each moment. If I knew I would feel this way, it would have made those hard moments feel a little less painful. Now I have a new kind of pain – the kind that ties your heart up in knots because you are so in love and want to shout it from the mountain top if only you could find words that would fit.

So with the few hours in each summer day, we’ve been doing more lingering. We’ve had lots of moments like this:

We finally realized that we could use the sprinklers at our own house, rather than poaching the neighbors lawns. Uncle Darin even comes out to turn his on so that we have two whole lawns worth of water wonderland. Watching the joy on his face clears away the cobwebs of the week.

Daddy also made a brilliant find – a diner at our local airport with outside seating, perfect for watching the little planes take off and land.

And then there was the reunion with Baboo – she hasn’t transitioned to the new room yet and they truly miss each other.

I was proud of Grandma, she called the other day and said, “I’m having withdrawl – we’re coming up.” We were happy to welcome them, even if it was only for a few hours. Knowing that work has been hard, they came bearing cobler and cookies and chicken salad for sandwiches. All foods that start with “C” and stand for “Comfort Food”. They also brought up some very special gifts. Grandma had been busy on her sewing machine, and Grandpa helped out with some designs on the computer. The first box held his very own construction vest. One that fits – made custom for him:

Brendan does not like to change his clothes. He doesn’t like to take clothes off, and he doesn’t like to put them on. But when he saw his superhero outfit, a silky reversible cape with a lightning bolt on one side, and a star on the other, and a matching “B” shirt – he came running over to put it on. And then he flew:

And last but not least, Brendan made a friend while we were out shopping:

After this happy little person goes to bed each night, Daddy and I stay up planning how to create as much magic as we can for him during his first trip to Disneyworld. I used to worry about ‘never having a relaxing vacation again’ after we became parents. Little did I know that vacations are the most fun when you get to show new things to the tiny little man who holds your heart. Hindsight is awesome.
