Preparing for two

We are not procrastinators in this house. When we have a goal to reach, we plan and make necessary preparations so that we are not caught unaware. To that end, we have been doing some preparations in our house for turning two. Brendan has been leading this charge, by practicing his tantrums. The tantrums can be triggered by such tragic events as: being told he can’t go outside, being asked to come in from outside, putting shirts on, taking shirts off, mommy not preparing pizza for dinner, or my personal favorite – mommy preparing pizza for dinner, but not letting him have “peeeeetza picnic” outside.
I know, I know… but please don’t report me to child protective services.

We have things to learn about tantrums. Sometimes it is clear that he just needs a little time and space (don’t we all…). Sometimes he pushes us away, then cries for a hug, then pushes us away, then cries for a hug. Two nights ago he hid under his crib because I had the audacity to try and put his sleeper on. I did not know how to get him out of there. So I turned out the lights, and he started to whine. I told him that it was time to come out and go to bed. Still nothing. So I told him I would count to three.
ONE. (he froze)
TWO. (he wiggled half his body out from under the crib) (long pause…) (no movement…)
THREE!
He didn’t move, so I grabbed his wiggly little body and put him in his crib. Crying began – “I wanna read biiiiiig buuuuuuuss boooooooooook!!!!” I explained to him that our big bus book reading time had been taken up by him hiding under the crib. More crying. I realized that I needed him in his sleeper – it was important for him to be comfortable and have a good sleep. So I tried a little bargaining. “Okay” I said, “If you will be a good boy and help Mommy put your sleeper on, we can read ONE book before bed.” “Okay!” he said. And the little stinker was good as gold as I got him dressed for bed. He also kept saying in his very sweetest voice, “hiiiii mommmmmy!” as he stroked my face and hair. I need to always remember that this little tiny person is smarter than I give him credit for.

Last night he had a very short tantrum that involved laying his whole little body onto the bottom rung of our stairs. He fit there nicely, which brought tears to my eyes remembering that while he seems so much older, he is still my tiny baby. I told him that it made Mommy sad when he was sad, and I asked him if he wanted a hug. “NOOO!” I asked him if he wanted a kiss instead. “NOOO!” I asked him if he wanted me to rub his back as I began rubbing his back. I got the quietest little “no” as he clearly began to relax. I kept rubbing. And soon he was in my arms. Both the best and more infuriating part of the tantrum is how the second it’s over, he is back to his usual charming self. It’s like an alien temporarily takes over my sweet little baby.

Some of my favorite phrases these days do not necessarily include “s’mine!” (which we hear a lot) but I do enjoy when he says, “s’my mommy”, “s’my daddy” – “s’my” really goes with just about anything, but the one that really cracked me up, “s’my diapers”. He also loves to ask, “What’s that guy doing?” at any opportunity. And the other night while we were having family dinner with the window open, he heard the voices of some kids playing in the park and yelled, “Hi People!!!” When he wants us to follow him he not only grabs our hand but adds “comer” which means ‘come here’ but rhymes with ‘summer’. Rob taught him that the two little black dots near his left foot are birth marks and now he will point to them and say, “birth marker” (Rob told him they make him extra special). And that last little hole on the right side of his two front teeth now proudly displays a little white tip of tooth.

Ah, the twos…. you know, all things considered, they’re pretty great.
