Family commuting is the best.
We were eating dinner at a restaurant Sunday night, and somebody had a birthday so people were singing. Brendan LOVED it. We sang happy birthday to him several times, and each time we would say, ‘who’s birthday is it this time?’. Usually he would say ‘Brendan’ but sometimes it would be ‘Ruby’ or ‘Dumptruck’. He will be all practiced up for the big day one month from today. I can’t believe he is almost 2.
The other night he picked a screwdriver out of Daddy’s toolbox and started RUNNING AROUND THE HOUSE. I asked him to stop, then I got more animated about it (i.e. yelled for him to stop) as I pictured the horror that could happen if he fell on it. I’m shuddering just thinking about it. He finally stopped and laughed for a second, and then started to really cry. I tried to explain that Mommy was just worried about him – that I didn’t want him to get hurt, and then I apologized for yelling. And I really meant it – I felt terrible. It’s tough being a Mom – my job is to keep him safe, and to love him with all my heart. In the eyes of a tiny person, sometimes it’s hard to understand how Mommy getting upset can mean that I love him. He cried and finally hugged me as hard as he could. We hugged and hugged and then everything was okay for both of us.

He is really talking. It’s so fun. When I walked in to his room this morning, he said “Good Morning Mommy!” The other day I thanked him for something and he said, “You’re welcome”. Clear as a bell. While he was in his highchair, he saw the puppy rolling on her back with her belly exposed and he reached his little fingers out and said, “I scratch!” On the way home Daddy and I were talking about needing to get gas and a little while later Brendan pointed out the window and said, “Gas station”. We also saw a truck carrying big logs (just like a picture in his book) and Daddy said, “Look at the big sticks!” Brendan said, “No Daddy – logs!” He calls fire engines, “engines”. He knows if things are “great big” or “tiny” or even “medium”. He is running faster and shooting more hoops. He still loves to look at pictures, and calls all the teachers at school by name.
This morning before school I whispered a little reminder to him, “Remember, no pushing today, okay?” (I witnessed an unfortunate pushing event yesterday…) He nodded and said, “Okay Mommy.” Then I asked for a kiss and he planted one right on my lips. It made my whole day.
Tonight we had more hiding under the crib when he didn’t want to go to bed, but then he wanted to read his big big bus book while we were both lying on the floor on our bellies. Then he scooched his little body over, put his arm around my neck, looked me in the eye and said, “mommy.” Recently he likes to hold hands for a while when he gets in bed. He pulls them right up to his face and holds them tight. He’s amazing. And he’s 23 months old.
