Easter

Last Easter, both Brendan and Mommy were down and out with a case of hand/foot/mouth disease which was actually great, because it meant that it wouldn’t take much to exceed Easter expectations. Happily, I think we were able to far exceed Brendan’s expectations.

Daddy had been out of town, so Mommy and Brendan got to take their first road trip together on Saturday. Granted, it was only an hour or so down to Grandma and Grandpa’s house, but we had fun driving together (i.e. snacks). Brendan had just figured out how to say “Gapa” so all the way down it was, “I wanna see Gama Gapa”, with the occasional break to look at cows and busses. We spent the day doing fun things like throwing rocks into the creek (Grandma had collected a whole bucket full of rocks, so we could do less hunting and more throwing). At bed time we got in jammies, had a bottle, read a story – and when it was clear to Brendan that he would actually be going to sleep in another room, he said, “I wanna go home”. I said that we were going to sleep at Grandma and Grandpa’s and he replied, “I wanna go home sleep bed”. It wasn’t until I was relaying the story to Lisa that she reminded me that aside from the incredibly sweet sentiment of a boy who loves his home, it was also a one of his longest sentences to date. After a few hugs, and reminders about how exciting it was to spend the night at Grandma and Grandpa’s, he went right to sleep. Daddy didn’t get in until after Brendan was in bed, but we were surprised with a 5:30 wake-up call. Daddy may have been sleepy, but he was happy to see his boy.

We got all dressed for Easter Sunday and headed off to church. Our minister actually announced to the congregation to turn around and look who was walking himself down the aisle. And while Rob looked awfully handsome, I’m pretty sure they were talking about Brendan. He was very good during the service – a little wiggly, a few calls of, “Hi Mum!” or “Hi Gapa!” – and one waving and smiling scene with the minister (the minister TOTALLY started it) – but he got high marks in deportment from everyone. My favorite church distraction was when he stood on my lap and put his face down on top of mind to give an exaggerated nuzzle and a kiss. Best Easter surprise ever.

After the service, there was a huge Easter egg hunt for the kids. Big kids and little kids each had their own area for hunting, and I thought I spotted some in the little kid area right away.

It was Brendan’s first real egg hunt, so we weren’t sure how quickly he would figure it out. Turns out if you give a kid a basket, and point out some brightly colored eggs, they get the hang of things pretty quickly. At least our boy did.

He had a great time – but took it very seriously and concentrated on the task at hand. When the basket started filling up, sometimes eggs would try and ‘fall down’ – he had to keep them all in place. Serious business. He also kept a close eye on the bigger kids to make sure he was doing it right.

My favorite part of this really long video is how he runs as fast as he can past many eggs in clear sight – to get to one particular egg he had in mind. He seems a bit partial toward blue.

There are more videos, but they look a lot like this one, so I’ll save them for Grandma.

Another favorite moment: finding a rock, and realizing that was just as big a treasure as the silly eggs. It went right into the basket.

When the hunt was over, then we could get back to carefree running around. With the addition of one purple egg.

After church, we headed back to Grandma and Grandpas where during nap time – the Easter Bunny made a visit. Soon after that, the Leong family came over for dinner and Brendan and the girls played together all day. Angela had taken a babysitting class, so she was extra knowledgeable about the ways of toddlers. At one point I had to go change B’s diaper, and he wasn’t very happy about being taken away from the fun. I asked him if he was enjoying his time with Angela and Micaela and he said, “friends” – “hug friends”. When we were done he went down the hall to hug them. Heart melting.

Grandma also used Brendan’s love of ice cream as an excuse to make some of her favorite homemade variety. We paired that with brownies rather than our traditional cheesecake, and it worked out great. Even reminded us of our first fourth of July with the Garrison clan, which is always a happy thing for us.

We headed home late, and B had his final bottle while tucked in under a blanket in his car seat. He pointed out the moon as we drove, and the next thing I knew he was asleep. I can remember the feeling of being slightly awake as my Dad would take me out of the car seat and lay me in bed, so I smiled as I watched Brendan’s eyes open for a few seconds as we walked up the stairs. I’m sure he fell asleep happy to be back in his own bed, dreaming of homemade ice cream, eggs filled with marshmallow bunnies, and hugs from so many people who love him.
