Busy Holiday Weekend

This is one of those weekends that feels like it just started, while simultaneously feeling like it’s been going on forever. Does that make sense? Probably not, I’m exhausted. This past week with each of us not at our best (Daddy eventually got a sore throat and pulled a hamstring) left us feeling – well, not at our best. On the roughest night for Brendan, when he just couldn’t get comfortable, I walked half asleep into his room to scoop him up – and I’ll admit that I was wishing I was back in my bed getting a full uninterrupted nights sleep. But as I snuggled up with him on the couch in the guest room, the only thought repeating in my heart was how honored I felt to be Brendan’s Mommy – and how glad I felt for these stolen moments together in the middle of the night.

We were all feeling mostly better, so we headed out to Cupertino on Saturday morning to help Grandma and Grandpa get ready for their annual Christmas party. The help was a little spotty this year, because rather than having an infant who was happy to sit and watch and giggle and coo, we had a toddler who wanted to be into everything. Grandma and Grandpa didn’t mind so much, but they were already tired and we like to try and provide as much relief as we can.

The party was very nice as always. Brendan started out a little shy, but warmed up as the night went on. He especially liked the singing and bell ringing – as well as all the toys and games and the little wooden bus he won as a prize. And the ham. He loved that somebody brought a ham.

It was raining on Saturday, and Brendan now knows (and loves) the word, ‘rain’. Just like his Mommy and his Grandma.

As usual, Grandma made way too many desserts – and as usual, every one of them was delicious. Bring on the holiday pounds!

A fun night. Now Grandma and Grandpa need to sleep for a week. Grandma got some extra nice hugs on our way out, so I’m sure that helped. You’ll notice that Daddy grabbed the camera and insisted on getting a few pictures of Mommy. I was tempted not to post them, but he wouldn’t like that. Besides, I like the ones taken of me looking at Brendan. I truly didn’t know Rob was taking them, and I have never gotten to objectively see the delight on my face as I watch my son.

Brendan decided not to sleep on the ride home (doesn’t he know that Santa is watching??!?!) so we were all a little short on sleep again Sunday morning. But we didn’t feel like we had packed quite enough into our weekend, so we went to the Dicken’s Christmas Fair. The family of one of the guys in Rob’s group at work is very involved in this, and Rob wanted to go and support him. I didn’t know what to expect, but turns out it was just like stepping back in time into an English city at Christmas time. The food, the clothing, the entertainment, the storefronts, the accents… they had it all. It was really fun. My favorite part was the Victorian style Santa. Brendan wasn’t overjoyed to be held by him, but he didn’t complain either. Actually, I’m laughing now as I look at the pictures. In my punchy state of mind he looks a little bit creepy – but maybe it’s just the fact that there is a strange old man holding my baby.

Brendan would like to offer his big hugs to everyone during this busy holiday season and remind you to enjoy the important things, and leave everything else behind. I need to listen especially hard when he tells me these important things. Oh how I love this boy.

He’s looking so big and dapper!
If his face was on a cookie, I’d eat it.

And Grandma C., that’s a yummy looking cake.
