We love books. We really do.
But this week we had a little tiff with books because it was a book that caused Brendan’s first blood producing injury. Yes, there was one time very early on when Mommy accidentally drew a little blood when cutting a nail, and there have been the shots. Both of those make me cringe to think about, so I’ll just move on. This time, Brendan caused his own injury. He was playing with his books, and pulled one up to his face as he has done a million times – but this time it must have caught him at just the right angle to wedge his teeth into his lip. I watched it happen, and I couldn’t have stopped it. There was crying, there was Mommy comforting – and then I realized there was also some bleeding. It wasn’t much, and it didn’t last long – but I didn’t like it. It was enough to remind me that I’ve got a little boy, and that I’m going to have to face the fact that he’s going to get hurt sometimes. I don’t know if I can ever really get comfortable with that, but I know I’ll have to accept it as part of life, because I never want to discourage him from exploring and adventuring. Or reading.
For now we have made our peace with books.
Every day this boy does so many new things. I can’t keep up.
One of my new favorites is that he says, ‘all done’ (which sounds a little more like ‘onion’) when he is done eating. This is far better than his past method of letting us know, which was to throw his remaining food onto the floor. I was amazed, however, when he also emphatically told me ‘ALL DONE!’ when I was washing his hair (his least favorite part of bath time). It’s not just something he says after mealtime, he seems to really understand what it means. This makes me feel extra bad that I need to keep rinsing his hair rather than honor the fact that I know what he is asking.

We continue to discover that he understands and processes a lot more than we realize. Yesterday Rob and I were looking at the clock and said, “Oh – it’s 5:00 – time for Chelsea’s dinner!” Brendan walked over, picked up Chelsea’s bowl, walked into the pantry where we keep her food, and tried to open the dog food container. Rob and I watched in stunned silence, but the puppy was ecstatic. We helped him scoop in the kibble, and he walked it back to her bone shaped place mat and fed the dog. Not only does this make him a genius, but means that we will be able to assign him chores in no time. I have a feeling potty training is going to go well too – he already knows when he is pooping, and today he even told me right before he started to go. Too much information? Maybe. So let me distract you with a few more pics of my cute boy.
He also knows that a cat says, ‘Mow’ a motorcycle (momo) says, ‘Vroom Vroom’, and my favorite – that a monkey says, ‘Eee Eee’ (done while moving his head side to side). Of course whenever we try and capture these moments on film, he clams up. He also has finally decided on a nick-name for Harper. It’s Baboo. Apparently they have decided to call each other by the same name. I have a movie of this, but it involves Mommy when she just woke up and I’m not sure anyone needs to see that.
Brendan also got a new table and chairs. Santa came early, and we have been enjoying doing many things at the table like art, reading stories, having snacks and all kinds of other things (which of course includes moving the chairs around, and climbing all over them).
