Yesterday was a special day – it was Harper’s first birthday party. Brendan went out and got himself a haircut, picked out a good looking outfit, signed her card, took a nice long nap – and we were ready. It was a back yard BBQ, and Harper has an awesome back yard. Complete with the most perfect grapefruit tree I have ever seen. Honestly, this thing looks like it belongs in a children’s fairytale book. I didn’t take a picture, so you’ll have to take my word for it.
We got to the party and put Brendan down and that was pretty much the last I saw of him for the rest of the night. This is the first time since he’s been walking that we’ve been somewhere where we could just put him down and let him roam – and it was amazing to see our boy in action. He was so confident and comfortable. The first thing he did was find some golf clubs and a golf ball – he picked them up and didn’t put them down for the entire party. (note to self: get Brendan a golf set) He walked around examining every corner of the yard, and every person in the yard. At first I almost felt sad that he wasn’t clinging to me – that he didn’t NEED me. But then I remembered that this is exactly what I would wish for my son. He was bold and fearless and self assured – and happy and curious and playful and kind. And he did come back for hugs every once in a while, just to remind me that he’s not all grown up quite yet.
Harper was actually asleep when we got there, but her adorable and equally sassy older sister Olivia was the life of the party. She and Charlie were taking turns pulling the younger kids around in the wagon, and suddenly Olivia announced that she wanted a turn. I started to pull Brendan out but she said she wanted to ride WITH Brendan – and then clarified that she “really just wanted to spend some time with Brendan”. Cue Mom’s melting heart. The melting almost turned to scandal however when Olivia started trying to hug and kiss Brendan – thank goodness the birthday girl hadn’t yet made her appearance.
Harper was all sunshine and happiness – I was excited when she recognized me and came over to give me one of our special hugs. She and Brendan got to share some moments too. At one point someone suggested that Harper and Brendan go for a ride in the wagon together, and a little boy who I didn’t even know yelled out, ‘Cause he’s her BOYFRIEND!!’. There is just no hiding true love.
The food was delicious, and Brendan was thrilled that they had a berry salad with plenty of blueberries AND a tomato salad AND mac-n-cheese too! Harper stuck mainly with the watermelon. Then she got to open a mountain of presents with so many cute little outfits that I can’t wait to see her modeling at school.

Then it was time for cake. There were cute little ladybug and flower cupcakes for everyone else, but Harper had her own special cake that her Grandma had made. At first she wasn’t sure what to do with it, but once the other kids showed her how to put her finger in it, just a taste wouldn’t do, and she attempted to pick up the entire cake and put it in her mouth. Absolutely hysterical. From that moment it was all about the cake for Miss Harper. She was still working on it when we left, and with the way she was going, I’m pretty sure she finished it.
Lisa and Joel and Charlie were there too. Lisa is the opposite of me, and spontaneously decided to cut all her hair off when we had our hair appointments this week. She would kill me for putting this picture up, but I think it’s adorable. Joel also gave me some quick camera tips to help improve my pictures, but I really need his full class. I’ll have to bribe him with baked goods.
We all had a great time, and we were sorry the evening had to come to and end – but our little man was exhausted. He slept soundly all the way home, and I’m pretty sure he was dreaming of Harper. And blueberries.
