Several Days in Hawaii

The days in Hawaii started running together in a really nice vacationy way. Here are a few of the distinct things I can remember right now:

We went to Pearl Harbor. A very important historical location, but not my favorite place to go with an almost eleven month old. You aren’t allowed to bring bags into the harbor. No purses, no diaper bags – anything we needed for the baby had to be loose. We could bring the stroller in, but only to some of the locations. I was holding a hot and squirmy baby most of the trip. But I knew my husband really wanted to go and read every plaque, so I was happy for him to get to see it.

Did I mention that my mother in law got a scratch on her eye? Not the most fun thing for her to have to go through on vacation, but she was a trooper – and we all got to have some unexpected fun in a cute little town called, ‘Haleiwa’. One of my most notable experiences there (other than my Mother in law getting to be helped by a doctor there) was getting to try the famous Matsumoto Shave Ice establishment. I had shave ice at another place the day before and thought it was no big whoop. Just a snowcone. But I had to try Matsumoto’s just to see if there was a difference. One pineapple/whitecake/vanilla ice cream with condensed milk concoction later, I totally got it. I was hooked. YUM. I may or may not have convinced everyone to go back today. Okay, I did – but I made sure Rob got more pizza out of the deal, and Bob and Jeanne got to do a little shopping.

We also went to the Dole Pineapple Plantation. It had a huuuuuuge gift shop that made my husband verrrrrrry grumpy. They had beautiful plumeria lei’s there, and both Jeanne and I got one. The car smelled delicious, and Brendan had fun pulling the petals off one at a time.

Yesterday Grandma and Grandpa treated us to a little babysitting time, and Rob and I got a massage in a little hut right over the ocean. We could hear the waves, and feel the breeze blowing – it was heavenly. Then we sat in comfy spa robes in cushy outdoor chairs and just took a few deep breaths and drank fruit infused spa water. Then we were starved, so we sat at a little restaurant on the beach and ate more of our favorite snack at this place – edamame with hawaiian sea salt and lots of roasted garlic.  It was super relaxing – and after a couple of hours away, we were practically running back to claim our little man.

Brendan has had several HUGE helpings of pasta.  I mean huge.  This boy loves to eat, and when he finds something he likes, he doesn’t want to stop.  After he had some of Grandpa’s pasta, he cried inconsolably when it was all gone.  I think he was just tired, because soon after he did the same thing when I removed the bath soap container from his hand so I could put his PJ’s on.  He has been such a good traveler, but even the most seasoned travelers have their trying moments.

We’ve spent lots of good time by several pools, and tomorrow we’re going to give the beach one more try.  So far we have been doing a good job with sunscreen – nobody has any burns – but we have a little color.  I’m almost ashamed to say that Brendan’s forearms have  a teeny amount of color.  I wouldn’t say burned at all, but I was hoping he wouldn’t even get kissed by the sun on this trip.

I’m not spending as much time as I thought I would taking pictures – I did bring my good camera with me, but it only made one quick appearance at which point Brendan splashed me, got a few drops on my good camera – and then the camera went back in it’s little case for the rest of the trip.  The old point and shoot has been treating me just fine.  We watched a hula dancer tonight, and I think Brendan had a little crush on her.  Frankly, I think my Mother in law had a little crush on her too.  Totally understandable.  Rob and his Mom also went on a helicopter tour this morning and saw lots of amazing things. He got some pictures, but I haven’t seen them yet – all I can comment on is the fun that Grandpa and Brendan and I had at the breakfast buffet. One of us ate his weight in ham, eggs, cheese and fruit – but I won’t mention any names.

I know I’m forgetting some good parts, but my eyes are getting sleepy and it’s time to pile into bed before we start our last day here tomorrow. I have enjoyed hearing from lots of you while we’ve been away – wish you were all here with us!  Aloha!
