When Rob and I took our ‘last adult vacation’ to Italy, and then our ‘last, last adult vacation’ to Aruba, I told him that this would be our last relaxing vacation. That after this trip, everything would change. Of course I was looking forward to the change, but truthfully, I was also slightly mourning the loss of our lazy morning brunches, loungy poolside afternoons, and late night cocktails. Sure enough, our first vacation day started with a peanut wake-up call at 3:15. Hawaii is 3 hours behind California, so this would have been an almost respectable 6:15 at home. Except for the fact that he went to bed at 9:00 Hawaii time last night. We didn’t mean for him to catch up on jet lag all in one night, but we had to swap rooms three times. It’s not a very interesting story, other than the part where we had already unpacked, so we threw everything into the rolling crib and rolled it down the sidewalk and over to the new room. Brendan was a champ the entire day of travel and settling in. He put up with more than I would have ever expected him to, and seemed as content to just be with us, as we were to just be with him. He gets an A+ and we owe him some extra credit.
So anyway, we expected more sleep out of the little guy – and we did get him to sleep in spurts until about 6:15 Hawaii time when we all got up and enjoyed bottle/beverage on the terrace as we watched the sun rise while listening to the waves and the breeze rustling the palm trees. Not a bad way to start the day. Soon we wandered over to find breakfast and learned that because it’s the hotels 40th anniversary today, there would be festivities all day – including 40% off our breakfast. Happy Anniversary Hotel!! I ordered a ham and cheese omlette thinking my friend might like a bite or two – but instead, he ate about half of it. Along with some of my hashbrowns and two strawberries. We finally just stopped feeding him for fear that he might burst. Then we went back and got lathered up with sunscreen (which, come to find out, acts as an awesome hair product for spikey surfer boy hair) for his very first extended time in the sun, and his first dip in the pool. The water in the pool was almost too warm, and I’m almost positive that Brendan just thought it was the biggest bath tub he had ever seen. He loved it. We splashed and played and had a grand time. And even though he had just napped before he went for a swim, when we got out and wrapped him in a towel, he laid his little head right on my chest. We sat there on the lounge chair snuggled up under our towel for quite a while. He wasn’t really sleeping, just relaxing – like he knew that’s what you were supposed to do after you go for a swim. I can tell you right now that no matter what else happens, that will be one of my very favorite memories from this trip. I just sat there and felt grateful for the chance to be on vacation with my family – and for all the events of the past year that enabled us to be here. We are slowing down. We are soaking in every moment. We aren’t planning – and we don’t really care what we are doing. We’re just being together. It doesn’t hurt that there are also palm trees, and ocean and pools with nice lounge chairs – there may or may not have even been a pina colada with lunch. But those things are just more icing on the best cake ever.
So it’s just like I told Rob – things are totally different. But once again my husband was right, because it’s also just like he told me it would be – it’s totally better. And I know there are too many pictures of a first swim, but there is nothing cuter than a little boy and his daddy having fun in their matching swimsuits.
