Intangibles

I started tearing up this morning when I heard “Super Bass” by Nicki Minaj, and figured I should blog myself a few reminders.

It’s really the first time I’ve heard the song, and I only heard it because I’ve been slummin’ it in Rob’s car while he takes my car to the shop (thanks dear!) and have to listen to the radio instead of my ipod.  The first time I heard this song was on the Ellen show when a little girl was signing it.  I wasn’t particularly moved by the song, but what got me was this awesome little girl.  She clearly has some talent, but she wasn’t too cool for school – she was putting her whole self into her excitement – she was fully present – and she was just going for it.  That’s what I want for Brendan.  Not that he will sing Super Bass on Ellen, but that whoever he is, and whatever he loves – he will allow himself to open up and be exactly who he is and just GO FOR IT.

Here is a clip:

There is another inspiration I am saving for Brendan.  Rob and I recorded the Year of the Quarterback special on Tom Brady last April because it was football and it was Tom Brady.  But the reason it’s still on our Tivo is that we liked the man that came out in the story.

Tom Brady is one of the most elite quarterbacks to ever play the game. He has played in 4 superbowls and won three of them.  He is the only player (other than Joe Montana – go niners) to ever win NFL Most Valuable Player and Superbowl MVP awards multiple times.  He holds the record for most consecutive regular season wins, and has come back from a serious injury to become the highest paid player in the NFL in the 2010 season.  Plus he is married to a supermodel.

But in the year Brady was drafted, he wasn’t selected until the 199th pick.  Six quarterbacks were chosen before him.  He didn’t have an impressive showing at the combine, and had a lackluster pre-draft scouting report – this was the summary:

Tom Brady is not what you’re looking for in terms of physical stature, strength, arm strength and mobility, but he has the intangibles and production and showed great Griese-like improvements as a senior.  Could make it in the right system, but will not be for everyone.

It’s all about the intangibles.  When I hire people at work I always tell my recruiter I’m looking for 50% skill and 50% spirit.  You can train someone in skills, but you can’t (easily) train them how to be a good person.  Brady had confidence in himself – and rather than complaining that people just didn’t get him, or that he had never been given a chance, or rather than giving up and then always talking about how good he could have been – he just kept going.  Few people believed in Tom Brady, but he believed in himself – and then he made everyone else believe too.

Here is a teaser:

I guess in my brain this is the same story told through a little girl, and an NFL quarterback:  Do what you love – Follow your dreams – Be yourself – Believe in yourself – Live your life with heart and tenacity. GO FOR IT!!!
