Four weeks ago at this time we were just arriving in Iowa. We had flown all night, and were driving all morning to try and get there in time. We were probably arriving at the hospital right around now, and in less than 3 hours, our son would be born. I will never forget that day. I will never forget how brave Meredith was, and how much love and thankfulness I felt for her as I watched her do all the hard work for the son who was already part of both of our hearts. I remember seeing him for the first time – studying his little face – looking into his new eyes and trying to recognize my son. It’s an indescribable feeling meeting your child for the first time – someone who will be part of your family forever, but whom you don’t yet recognize.
In a couple of days Brendan will officially be one month old. But for the next couple of days I still get to say how old he is in weeks. I know people still use weeks as a measurement for babies, but I relish this time when there is no unit of time greater than weeks that can count how old he is. For a little while, it was days… I don’t want him to ever change, but at the same time he gets cuter and sweeter every single day. I need to find a way to freeze a version of this little guy once a week, and preserve each Brendan for all of time. Or I guess I can just make sure that I enjoy every single minute with him, and spend a little extra time kissing those baby fingers and toes.
Looking at these pictures of me, maybe I should also spend just a little extra time brushing my hair. Sheesh.
