As someone very dear to me pointed out, it has been a long time since my last post. She speculated that perhaps I was in mourning over the Uncles departure, and I am – but the lack of posting has been due to the increase in activity. Everything starts to heat up this year, and once again, we proved that we are THOSE people – you know, the crazy ones who put their tree up before Thanksgiving:
We got our tree Saturday, and it’s fully decorated today, along with the rest of our house. Thanks of course, to Brendan. He helped pick out the tree (and told us the one we got was the very best one of all), he helped decorate (and re-decorate) the tree, and this year – he is in love with the snow globes and music boxes. As I was sitting on the floor with him enjoying all the treasures, I looked at Rob and said: This is Christmas. And that’s why we put the tree up early – so we don’t have to rush through Thanksgiving, and we don’t have to rush through Christmas. It gives us more of the moments I want. The quiet ones.
Speaking of stars on trees, Brendan looked outside this past week and told me he saw a star – I asked him where he saw it since it was day time, and he told me it was at the top of the tree. I looked up and saw that on a nearly bare tree, one leaf still clung to the very top, looking like a star. It was a beautiful moment I would have missed if he hadn’t shown me. On the other hand, one day on the way to work he let us know that the mountain beside us was ‘too big’. That he wanted a ‘tiny mountain’ instead. He was very upset about this too big mountain. And rounding out our nature news, one morning he called me to the window to look at the ‘pretty clouds’. I got to the window and realized there wasn’t a cloud in the sky – perhaps he hears Mommy mention the pretty clouds more often than I realized.
Brendan has some favorite words/phrases right now. He often says that he wants to ‘go on an adventure’ (and we do go on lots of them – everything is an adventure if you look at it the right way). He also uses the word ‘many’ many times a day. There can be ‘many people’, ‘many cars’, ‘many grapes’. He has a favorite bridge, and it’s the Golden Gate Bridge. We learned this as he was crying his eyes out when we drove over the Richmond Bridge – “I wanna go on the Golden Gate Briiiiiiidge!!! It’s my faaaaaaavorite!!!!”. And he has suddenly fallen in love with superheros. Superman in particular, but Batman and Spiderman and even Wonder Woman are cool too. We have one toddler speed superhero book and the night we read it for the first time, it blew his mind. The second he got up the next morning he had to read his book – and when we told him he couldn’t bring it to school because we wanted to keep it safe, he went over and put it in Daddy’s work bag. Daddy downloaded the Superman theme that we have been whistling for him since he was little(r) and although I was not present for the first hearing, Rob said that Brendan literally cackled with glee. I was there, however, when Brendan was walking down the hall saying, ‘here comes Superman!’. And aside from the fact that it’s hard to keep his one pair of Superman Pajamas and his two Superhero shirts washed all the time, it’s a pretty awesome phase.
Daddy was thrilled that the In-n-Out burger by our house finally opened. He had been checking progress every week since they broke ground, so this was a big moment.
I was thrilled when Brendan helped me pick out flowers at the Farmers Market, and then carried them for me:

He’s still in his Mama phase, and that doesn’t bother me one bit.
There are occasionally, signs that Brendan is two. After a particularly hard evening where he was just not able to make good choices, he finally had to go to bed without a story. He cried and cried in his crib, and that is always when Mommy has to be physically restrained to keep from running in. Finally I said to Rob, ‘lets not read him a book – but lets go in and just remind him how much we love him, and sing him a song.’ Rob agreed, and just as we were walking in, we heard (through sobs) “I wanna, (sniff sniff) make better choices!!!). We ran in and gave him a big hug and he told us again that he wanted to make better choices. We assured him that we KNEW he did. That we ALL make bad choices from time to time, but we can always learn and do better the next time. We hugged on him and told him that he is such a good boy and we are so proud of him. Then he agreed to brush his teeth (and actually did brush his teeth), and you can bet your bottom dollar that he got his story.
Then there was the day we went into school and Brendan said, “Where my baby?” We were puzzled and looked to the teachers. They let us know that all day he had been pretending that his striped sweater was his baby. He cradled his baby, and even kept his sweatshirt on so he could use it like a baby carrier and tuck his ‘baby’ inside. Apparently that baby was just a one day thing, but it was pretty darn cute. And in case you were wondering, his baby’s name was, “Brendan”, as almost everything is named when we ask for his input. I have to admit, it’s an awesome name.
And last but not least, Uncle Brian sent over this picture from one of Rob’s birthday celebrations. And really, shouldn’t “Robtober” stretch a little bit into November as well?
I will have more pictures of Brendan’s perfect ornament placement (and re-placement) on the tree, as well as other holiday merriment – but look! There is some fall in our town! Just in time for Christmas.
