Grandma is not much of a party person – at least when the celebration revolves around her, (if it revolves around someone she loves, especially her Grandson, then watch out!) So when it came time to celebrate a very special milestone, I knew we had to get creative. Step one: we arranged for 80 of her favorite people to send a numbered card on her birthday. I hired my friend who happens to be one of the best graphic designers in the world to create a special card just for her. I love how they turned out, and Mom is enjoying all these beautiful envelopes arriving in her mailbox each day (today, on her actual birthday, she got 25!).
Step two: Ask the best chef we know, and the couple with the nicest house we’ve ever seen, who happen to be the most gracious and loving hosts, to throw a dinner party for Mom with all her favorite dishes. We invited the Leong family too – because having a few extra people isn’t actually a party, it’s just more festive. I made a cake – not because I’m an excellent cake baker, but because I knew Mom would know it was filled with extra love.
Step three: Have the cutest little boy in the world, who happens to be her Grandson, be his usual charming self. For instance, he played Happy Birthday on his harmonica:
And played hide and seek:
We let him take the morning off school so he could take Grandma to breakfast. On his own he climbed into Grandma’s lap rather than laying on his lounger – this is a big deal. He also delivered Grandma some presents.
Then he cried his little eyes out when they had to go home. He loves spending time with Grandma and Grandpa – sometimes Mommy tries to get in the way, but at least he’s polite about it.
I hope Grandma felt how much she is loved. Cause it’s a whole big bunch!!
Also, thanks to my ultra-talented friends, and of course my husband and Dad and Brendan. It was an awesome team effort!
